Decades of Home Dialysis Expertise

HDT has spent more than 20 years focused exclusively on home dialysis. Our nurses have trained hundreds of people in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, and we understand the real-world challenges you face at home, ensuring you receive smoother training, and support you can rely on.

Perfect 5 Star Ratings By Patients

Our patients consistently report some of the highest satisfaction levels in the region, not because we chase ratings, but because we stay present, accessible, and committed. When you call, you reach someone who knows your name. When something changes, we help you adjust quickly. You feel cared for, and that matters.

A Leader in Home-Focused Care

HDT was built on the belief that home dialysis gives people more freedom and better quality of life, and everything we do reflects that. We tailor your training, schedule, and follow-up to your life, not the other way around, helping you stay confident, independent, and in control of your treatment.

The HDT Story

For over 20 years, we have provided the highest-quality dialysis care for hundreds of San Diego patients.

Home Dialysis Therapies of San Diego was founded in 2004 by Dr. Andrew King, head of nephrology at Scripps Clinic, and long-term dialysis nurse Denise Barnes, RN. Together, they saw the need for San Diego patients to have better options for home dialysis, including peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home hemodialysis (HHD).

Dr. King believed that there is more to living than just staying alive. After more than a decade as a nephrologist, he understood the difficulties patients face when confronting kidney failure and the shortcomings of large dialysis providers. He identified four key elements essential for a successful home program: experienced nurses, the highest-quality equipment, data-driven care, and close collaboration between nephrologists, vascular surgeons, and transplant teams.

Over an extended lunch at Champagne Bakery, he and Denise committed to building San Diego’s first home-only dialysis program. More than 21 years later, Home Dialysis Therapies of San Diego continues to provide patients a better alternative to the large dialysis organizations that had long dominated the region.

What Makes HDT Different?

A Care Team That Cares

When you come to HDT, you’re treated as a person, not a chart. You work with the same nurse, the same dietitian, the same social worker, and a nephrologist who genuinely stays involved. Your team learns how you live, what matters to you, and what support you need to succeed with home dialysis. That consistency is what makes care safer, clearer, and easier to manage. When your team knows you well, dialysis becomes less overwhelming and more workable day to day.

Integrated Team-Based Care

HDT brings your full care team including your nurse, nephrologist, dietitian, and social worker into the room together during your visits. This level of coordination ensures real-time problem-solving, immediate clarification, and shared decision-making with you at the center. Instead of fragmented communication or delayed responses, your team develops your plan collaboratively and transparently, giving you the confidence and clarity needed to manage kidney disease successfully.

Unbiased Education

Most people never get clear, unbiased information about their dialysis options. At HDT, you do. We explain peritoneal dialysis, home hemodialysis, nocturnal therapy, and every other option in straightforward language. You’ll learn how each therapy works, what the daily routine looks like, and how it can fit into your life at home. When you understand your choices, you can decide on a treatment plan that supports your independence and your long-term health.

Experience That Improves Outcomes

Home dialysis outcomes improve when patients are supported by an experienced team. HDT’s nurses average more than nine years of home-dialysis expertise, with several surpassing 20–25 years. This depth of knowledge reduces complications, accelerates successful training, and helps you remain at home longer. Our program’s size, nearly 170 active home patients, and our long-tenured staff contribute to lower infection rates, higher transplant readiness, and more stable long-term health outcomes.

Your Home Dialysis Care Team

At HDT, we understand that consistency is king for our patients! Outside of your regular nephrologist, you also work with a small, consistent team that knows you personally and tries everything they can to make your treatment work around your routine. For most patients, the same nurse, social worker, and dietitian follow you across months and years, so you are not re-explaining your story at every visit. Together, they focus on your treatment, your daily life, and your long-term goals, so your dialysis journey can be the best it possibly can!

Your Home Dialysis Nurse

Your nurse is your day-to-day clinical anchor. They teach you how to use your equipment safely, review your treatment logs, and help you spot changes in symptoms before they become emergencies. Over time, they get to know your habits, your family, and preferences and work with your nephrologist to adjust your prescription so it fits both your labs and your life.

Your Clinical Social Worker

Dialysis affects more than your lab results. Your social worker helps you navigate insurance and benefits, connect with community resources, and cope with the emotional strain that can come with chronic illness. They can also support conversations about work, family, and transportation, so practical problems are addressed alongside your medical care.

Your Renal Dietitian

Dialysis food choices can feel restrictive, but you do not have to figure them out alone. Your renal dietitian reviews your labs, talks through what you actually like to eat, and helps you plan meals, snacks, and fluids that fit your treatment plan. The goal is to reduce confusion at the grocery store and make your diet feel more sustainable over the long term.

From Our Founder

“In 2003, I attended a dinner presentation by one of the nation’s largest dialysis companies on outcomes in San Diego. The results for in-center hemodialysis were respectable, but the outcomes for peritoneal dialysis were abysmal. A colleague leaned over and whispered, ‘You ought to open a home dialysis program.’ In that moment, the idea for Home Dialysis Therapies of San Diego was born. From the very beginning, our mission has been simple but unwavering: to give patients better care, better outcomes, and a better life through home dialysis.”
